As a single mother, I am always trying to find ways to save money or earn a little extra. From clipping coupons, to looking for promo codes online, to using any creative abilities I possess, to make something that will sell. I have had my share of ideas that did not amount to much, but some that have afforded me the opportunity to earn a little pocket money.
Take Advantage of Social Media
For those of you who have considered using social media to your advantage, it’s not a bad idea. The free advertising and limitless connection to friends, friends of friends, and those you may not even know, provide a network of possibilities. Just a few months ago, I took some flattering pictures of the prom gowns that line my closet, added a little information on sizes, and garment condition to my post, and sold them online for a little profit. Since I have three daughters, that have attended more dances and proms than can be counted, I had plenty of merchandise to post. It was a nice kick back for the thousands I spent on dresses that were only worn once.
Clean Out Your Closet
You may be surprised at what items you have in your closet or storage. Taking the time to do some spring cleaning may benefit you greatly. You may find things you forgot you had, that you obviously don’t need, if you didn’t even know you had them. The saying, “one man’s trash, is another man’s treasure”, couldn’t be more true. While the saying shouldn’t be taken literal, remember no one will want your actual trash, but what may no longer interest you or fit your needs or taste, may be just what another is looking for. So, if you happen to find items that are worthless in your eyes, take a minute to post them on any social media platform that you can. You have nothing to lose! Social media is free and so are the products that you are getting rid of. If you make a sale, its extra money in your hand, if not, it’s at no cost to you. It is a win win situation.
If you have already searched through every closet, storage container, and electronics cabinet, in-turn emptying out your bag of tricks to make some extra money, don’t give up. As a parent, aka a magician, you often find one more trick up your sleeve when times are tough. Go back to the think tank that is always on overdrive, and come up with another idea to make the money that is needed.
Get Creative
I use my creativity to stir up some new ideas. Just the accomplishment of making something from nothing, has always thrilled me. Whether it is something for myself, my children, or my home, I welcome the challenge of trying something new. You may have the same love for creativity. If so, use it to make something that can add to the income in your home. Even if it is a few dollars here and there, it is more than you started with.
For my girls, I have always made costumes for school plays, recitals and Halloween, along with the occasional alterations to their clothing. For my home, I have tried my hand at holiday decorations, picture frames, and the art of repurposing or restoring anything I could get my hands on. For myself and my sanity, I have made, or at least tried to make handbags. You may find it odd, but sewing has always been a stress reliever for me. It’s a place, a zone, that I can lose myself in when things get crazy. Imagine how crazy it can get with three daughters. I can tell you I have a few storage containers full of sewing projects.
Turn Your Skill Into A Business
Always wanting to venture out on my own, and become a business owner, I never stop trying new ideas. My current business venture includes making pillows, throw blankets, and memory quilts. Not quite sure how I landed on this particular avenue, but it most likely started about 9 years ago when my oldest daughter turned 16 years old. After we lost my husband, their father, I decided to make a memory quilt for her on her special day. The quilt was made completely of her father’s clothes. It was my first of many quilts. I later made each of my other daughters one on their 16th birthday as well. From there, I found myself making them as gifts for many other family members. It seemed fitting to start my business, doing something I had knowledge in, enjoyed, and that could help to bring others so much happiness.
While I currently hold a full-time job, I try and optimize any free time I get, or don’t get, to sew. It’s true that fabric can be quite costly, but I am hoping it will pay off in the end. For now, I use any extra money I have to buy the materials I need, but I have considered using the option of business funding to purchase enough fabric to really get my business off the ground. Having the start-up money needed to run a business is an essential part of success.
All It Takes Is One Good Idea
Being an entrepreneur is not for everyone. I understand wanting to have the security of knowing you are guaranteed a paycheck, insurance coverage, and the benefits that come along with working for a company. It is certainly a less stressful path than working for yourself, but is it as rewarding. Only you can answer that. For me, a holding a full-time job isn’t an option, it’s a necessary. As it may be for you. That doesn’t mean you should abandon the hopes of establishing another form of income on the side. Do what you enjoy. Whether that means sewing, tackling a DIY project, or making baked goods. Many people who like to cook, do well with catering or making party trays. It’s an idea.
All it takes is one good idea!
